  Tweelingbroers Bryce en Aaron Dessner van indierockband The National bedachten The Long Count samen met videokunstenaar Matthew Ritchie als een multimediaal concert waarin de tijd vóór de tijd, het ondeelbare moment vóór de schepping wordt uitgedrukt. Geïnspireerd door de historischmythologische tekst Popol Vuh, waarvan de Long Count-kalender een onderdeel is, leggen zij allerlei associatieve verbanden tussen deze scheppingsmythe van de Maya’s en hun eigen leven. Tegen een caleidoscopisch decor van videoprojecties brengen de broers samen met een twaalfkoppig orkest, de zang van Shara Worden, Kelley Deal en Matt Berninger (van The National) een mythische liederencyclus met subtiel in elkaar grijpende gitaarduetten, haast liturgische a capella, gelaagde klankstructuren en zinderende rock.

  Indie rockband The National’s twin brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner conceived The Long Count in collaboration with video artist Matthew Ritchie as a multimedia concert in which time before time, the indivisible moment before creation is expressed. Inspired by the mythological history of the Popol Vuh, of which the Long Count calendar is an important part, they connect this Mayan creation myth with their own lives. Against a kaleidoscopic background of video projections the brothers team up with a twelve-strong orchestra, singers Shara Worden, Kelley Deal and the National’s Matt Berninger to present a mythical song cycle of subtly interweaving guitars, solemn a capella, layered sound structures and scintillating rock.
