  In zijn eigen land Senegal, is Thione Seck een grootheid, vergelijkbaar met Youssou N’Dour en Baaba Maal. Hij is een van de geestelijke vaders van de mbalax, de populaire dansmuziek van Senegal en Gambia die in de jaren zeventig ontstond. In het Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ brengt Seck een spannende mix van mbalax en oosterse muziek uit India en de Arabische wereld, zoals die te vinden is op zijn cd Orientation. Het album werd geproduceerd en gearrangeerd door François Béart en werd in 2006 genomineerd voor de BBC Radio 3 World Music Album of the Year Award. Dit jaar wordt het album voor het eerst live gespeeld en heeft het Holland Festival de Nederlandse première.

  In his own country Senegal Thione Seck is a big name, on a footing with Youssou N’dour and Baaba Maal. He is one of the founders of mbalax, the popular dance music of Senegal and Gambia that evolved in the seventies. In the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ Seck will play a fascinating mix of mbalax and Eastern music from India and the Arab world, as featured on his cd Orientation. Produced and arranged by François Bréant, the album was nominated for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Album of the Year Award. This is the first time that Seck has toured with this material, and is a Dutch première for the Holland Festival.
