GENERAL INFORMATION MUZIEKGEBOUW AAN ´T IJ
Concert Hall of the 21st Century
The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ opened its doors to the public in the spring of 2005. The spectacular building has become Amsterdam’s Concert Hall of the 21st Century, with an exciting, contemporary programme which continually forges links with other eras, styles, cultures and art forms. The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ shows current musical developments in the form of special series, festivals, multimedia concerts and exhibitions.
Concert Hall of the 21st Century - Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ from Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ on Vimeo.
Cultural location
The Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ serves as a cultural anchor - one of the links connecting the newly developed IJ banks with the old heart of the city. The striking building, with its imposing glass façade, was designed by the Danish architects 3XN and has won various Dutch and international architectural prizes. The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ consists of a multifunctional state of the art chamber music hall, seating 725, several foyers for workshops and master classes, a smaller hall seating 100, and extensive conference and catering facilities.
31-tone Fokker organ
Besides the main concert hall we also have a smaller hall – the BAM Hall – which can seat 100. Since May 2009 this hall has been home to the completely renovated Fokker organ, a unique 31-tone organ, owned by the Huygens-Fokker Foundation, which dates back to 1950.
Cafe restaurant Star Ferry
The ground floor of the building contains Star Ferry, the cafe restaurant of the Muziekgebouw. This restaurant is open to the public and serves lunches and dinners. It is popular with many music lovers who come to enjoy a meal before the concert. Star Ferry has a waterfront open-air seating area and superb views across the River IJ . For diners Star Ferry has an à la carte menu and a three-course concert menu. Larger groups are also welcome to dine à la carte. Up-to-date menu information is available on the website www.muziekgebouw.nl. You are advised to book your dinner in advance, especially on concert evenings. Star Ferry is open daily from 10.30 to 23.00, and on concert evenings until midnight. Lunch is served between 11.00 and 15.30 and dinner between 17.30 and 22.00.
Bimhuis
The building also houses the Klankspeeltuin, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ ’s educational project. Jutting out from Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ is a raised ‘black box’ which contains the Bimhuis, stage for jazz and improvised music. The Bimhuis has a comfortable auditorium with spectacular views over the old city and a spacious bar overlooking the River IJ . The two organisations are neighbours. For more information please see www.bimhuis.nl.

The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ has excellent acoustics and sightlines which means that there is no ranking in the seating arrangement of the auditorium. Most of the season tickets will have a particular seat allocated to them. However, due to the flexible auditorium arrangement, some concerts will have no seat allocation. Check seating plan here.

Interval drinks
The ticket price includes one drink during the interval, unless stated otherwise on the ticket. If there is no interval during the concert, the interval drink will be served afterwards.
Group discount
For group bookings of more than 10 people you, are requested to call the Box Office.
Youth prices
New: Early Bird youth prices
We are convinced that our concert programme is also of interest to young people. In order to provide extra encouragement to young people to attend a concert in the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, we are introducing Early Bird youth prices this season for young people up to 30 years old. Whether you are studying or working, you pay € 10.00 for a concert ticket, including a drink during the interval!
How it works:
• Early Bird youth prices are valid for every concert. For each concert, a number of tickets have been reserved at the Early Bird rate. These tickets are sold on a first-come-first-served basis, so the sooner you order, the better chance you have of getting a ticket at the early-bird price of € 10.00.
• You can purchase Early Bird tickets at the Box Office and through the Box Office Telephone.
Spotprijs: 30 minutes before the start
The Muziekgebouw has a special bargain for young people up to 30 years and for music and conservatory students: the Spotprijs. For concerts that are not sold out, you can buy a ticket 30 minutes before the concert starts for € 10.00. This discount is valid only 30 minutes before the start of the concert and provided the concert is not sold out. You must show a valid identity card or student card to take advantage of this offer.
VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES
With its specially adapted lift and toilet, the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ is easily accessible for patrons with disabilities. If you coming by car, the ‘Piet Hein Garage’ car park, which is situated immediately under the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ , has parking spaces for the disabled (paid parking).
If you are coming by tram, you should take Tram 25 and get off at ‘Passenger Terminal Amsterdam’ instead of at the ‘Muziekgebouw’ stop. From there, it is an easier walk to the main entrance, as it avoids the steep pedestrian bridge.
Wheelchair spaces in the concert halls
The main Concert Hall has several wheelchair spaces. The BAM hall is also accessible to people with limited mobility.
Please indicate that you require a wheelchair space when booking your ticket. If your wheelchair is larger than the usual size, please indicate this when booking as well.
People with hearing impairments
Visitors with hearing impairments can use our infrared system. Please mention when booking that you wish to use this facility. Receivers will be available in the cloakroom.
