Anouar Brahem Quartet

Er gaat rust, schoonheid en kracht uit van het snarenspel van Anouar Brahem. In zijn veertigjarige loopbaan ontwikkelde hij een unieke stijl op de ud, de Arabische luit. Telkens weer plaatst hij het eeuwenoude instrument in een ander daglicht. Voor het eerst blikt hij nu terug op zijn oeuvre, met de jazzmusici achter het ECM-album The Astounding Eyes of Rita.

De diepte van de basklarinet, het flexibele van de elektrische bas, het sierlijke van oosterse percussie: het kwartet van Anouar Brahem heeft alles in huis om zijn rijkgeschakeerde composities vorm te geven. De Tunesische meester put uit eerdere albums met grote namen uit de jazz en traditionele Arabische muziek, van Madar met saxofoonlegende Jan Garbarek tot het succesvolle Blue Maqams.

Anouar Brahem’s string playing exudes tranquility, beauty and strength. During his forty-year career he has developed a unique style of playing the oud, the Arabic lute, constantly placing the age-old instrument in different situations. For the first time he will now look back on his oeuvre, with the jazz musicians featured on his ECM album The Astounding Eyes of Rita.

The depth of bass clarinet, the flexibility of electric bass and the gracefulness of eastern percussion: Anouar Brahem’s quartet has what it takes to shape the richly varied compositions of its leader. The Tunesian master draws from earlier albums featuring renowned players from jazz and traditional Arabic music, from Madar by sax legend Jan Garbarek to the successful Blue Maqams.
