Cécile McLorin Salvant Quintet

De New York Times noemt haar in één adem met de grote drie stemmen van de jazz: Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan en Ella Fitzgerald. Toch klinkt de Amerikaanse zangeres Cécile McLorin Salvant allesbehalve nostalgisch – als geen ander geeft ze een nieuwe, eigentijdse betekenis aan bekende en minder bekende juweeltjes uit de jazz, soul en blues. Zelfs chansons komen voorbij; Cécile werd in het Engels én Frans opgevoed en studeerde barok en klassieke muziek in Frankrijk. Zelf componeerde ze onder meer de songcyclus Ogresse, waarin haar liefde voor sprookjes en mythologie tot uitdrukking komt.

Toen Cécile McLorin Salvant vijf jaar geleden op uitnodiging van het BIMHUIS en het Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam optrad, beleefde ze net haar grote doorbraak. Inmiddels heeft ze drie Grammy’s op haar naam en haalde ze meerdere keren de top van de prestigieuze Downbeat Critics Poll. Nu treedt ze op met haar kwintet met gitarist Marvin Sewell, die eerder speelde bij Cassandra Wilson en Lizz Wright.

Still, American singer Cécile McLorin Salvant sounds anything but nostalgic – like no other she gives new, contemporary meaning to famous and lesser-known gems from jazz, soul and blues. Even chansons are part of her repertoire; Cécile was raised in English and French, and she studied baroque and classical music in France. Her original compositions include the song cycle Ogresse, which reflects her love for fairy tales and mythology.

When Cécile McLorin Salvant was invited by BIMHUIS and Muziekgebouw to perform in Amsterdam, she just experienced a major breakthrough. Meanwhile she has earned three Grammys and she has topped the prestigious Downbeat Critics Poll several times. This time she will perform with her quintet featuring guitarist Marvin Sewell, who previously performed with Cassandra Wilson and Lizz Wright.
