Double bill met de Amerikaanse synthesizerpionier Charles Cohen en de Berlijnse avant-technoproducer Rabih Beaini (Morphine Records).

Alsof ze gisteren gemaakt zijn, zo klinken de opnames van synthesizerpionier Charles Cohen uit de jaren 70 en 80. Zijn trance-opwekkende improvisaties op de analoge Buchla Music Easel roepen vergelijking op met Sun Ra, Kraftwerk, minimal music en moderne techno. Recent werd zijn vroege werk uitgebracht door het Berlijnse Morphine Records, het label van techno-producer Rabih Beaini. Het betekende een grote herwaardering voor Cohen, voorheen alleen bekend binnen de experimentele avant-garde van Philadelphia en de Amerikaanse oostkust.

Vorig jaar verscheen zijn nieuwe album Brother I Prove You Wrong, dat waardering oogstte op invloedrijke muziekblogs en websites als Pitchfork en Resident Advisor. Sindsdien treedt Charles Cohen ook op in onze contreien, vaak in samenwerking met Rabih Beaini. Deze van oorsprong Libanese techno-avantgardist opereerde tot voor kort onder de naam Morphosis. Hij staat bekend om zijn donkere, gruizige en tegelijk uiterst dansbare producties en dj-sets.

Double bill featuring American synthesizer pioneer Charles Cohen and Berlin-based avant-techno producer Rabih Beaini (Morphine Records). ‘Some of the most vital electronic music’ (Resident Advisor).

As if they were made yesterday, that’s the first impression made by the 1970s/80s-recordings of synthesizer pioneer Charles Cohen. His trance-inducing improvisations on the analog Buchla Music Easel bring to mind Sun Ra, Kraftwerk, minimal music and modern techno. Recently his early work was released by Berlin-based Morphine Records, the label run by techno producer Rabih Beiani. These releases sparked a renewed interest in Cohen, who had previously been known only within the experimental avant-garde of Philadelphia and the American East Coast.

Last year saw the release of his new album Brother I Prove You Wrong, which earned the acclaim of influential music blogs and websites such as Pitchfork and Resident Advisor. Since then Charles Cohen also performs in our regions, often in collaboration with Rabih Beiani. Until recently this Lebanese-born avant-techno producer had been operating under the name Morphosis. He’s known for his dark, distorted and simultaneously very danceable productions and DJ sets.
