Islam Chipsy & EEK

Van alle Egyptische chaabi-bands die op dit moment furore maken steekt Islam Chipsy & EEK er met kop en schouders bovenuit. Zonder de chaabi-traditie van vrolijke bruiloftsmuziek naar de kroon te steken onderscheidt de keyboard virtuoos zich met een modernistische fijngevoeligheid. Hij pioniert met ‘nieuwe’ speeltechnieken, waarbij hij met zijn vuisten hele toonclusters in één slag op zijn keyboard aanslaat. Begeleid door twee drummers lijkt het op een gecontroleerde explosie: krachtig, maar precies.

Dankzij de uitgave van een bootleg genaamd Live at the Cairo High Cinema Institute op Nashazphone (100 copies) uit 2014 en geholpen door hun reputatie als uitmuntende performers, is Islam Chipsy & EEK snel opgekomen in de internationale muziekscene. Hun eerste studioalbum Kahraba uit 2015 staat bol van razende off-beat ritmes en gefragmenteerde Egyptische hits. Dit optreden is meer dan overweldigend.

Idiosyncratic chaabi by Egyptian keyboard pioneer

Rising at the same time with the new wave of chaabi, keyboard virtuoso Islam Chipsy distinguishes himself through his modernist sensibility from his contemporaries in Egypt. Circumventing pastiche or irony, he destabilizes chaabi tradition by pioneering a new keyboard technique, using palms and fists to slam keys and hit entire tone clusters at once, as well as performing flanked by two drummers. It’s something akin to a controlled explosion: forceful yet precise.

Thanks to the release of a live bootleg entitled Live at the Cairo High Cinema Institute, a live bootleg via Nashazphone/100Copies in 2014, Islam Chipsy & EEK’s emergence on the international music scene was preceded by their reputation as extraordinary performers. Their debut studio album Kahraba in 2015 is marked by frenetic syncopated rhythms and chopped up Egyptian standards. There is more to this than an all-consuming experience.
