Tijdens het Amsterdam Dance Event zoekt The Rest is Noise met een dubbelprogramma van Ben Frost en Jlin de randen van dancemuziek op. Na verpletterende optredens in 2012, 2013 en 2014, presenteert Ben Frost op 18 oktober zijn nieuwe AV-show gebasseerd op het nieuwe album The Centre Cannot Hold in samenwerking met visueel artiest MFO. Jlin opent de avond met de wereldpremière van haar nieuwe AV-show, ontworpen door MFO en live uitgevoerd door visueel artieste Theresa Baumgartner.
Ben Frost
Duistere noise, diepe bassen en ijle synthesizerklanken: de elektronische muziek van Ben Frost dompelt je onder in geluidsgolven en doet je naar adem happen. Fysieke kracht is wat de Australische componist wil overbrengen en zijn live-optredens zijn dan ook intense ervaringen. Belangrijke inspiratiebronnen zijn de harde rockconcerten uit zijn jeugd en het weerbarstige landschap van IJsland, waar hij sinds 2005 woont.
Ben Frost maakte grote indruk met zijn albums op het label Bedroom Community, dat hij oprichtte met componist Nico Muhly en producer Valgeir Sigurðsson. Frost componeerde zijn eerste opera The Wasp Factory (2013) naar aanleiding van de gelijknamige roman van Iain Banks. Naast soundtracks voor films en series maakte hij muziek voor dansvoorstellingen van Wayne McGregor/Random Dance en Akram Khan. Als producer werkte hij samen met onder anderen Tim Hecker, Colin Stetson en Brian Eno. Zijn nieuwe album The Centre Cannot Hold met de hulp van sound-engineer Steve Albini bewijst wederom de impact van zijn muziek.
Jlin
Bij een show van dit kaliber past een indrukwekkende tweede act: Jlin met de première van haar nieuwe AV-show, ontworpen door MFO en live uitgevoerd door Theresa Baumgartner. Jlin werd binnen korte tijd een grote naam op dancefestivals dankzij haar debuut Dark Energy, onder meer verkozen tot beste album van 2015 door The Wire. Op haar tweede album Black Origami geeft ze opnieuw een eigenzinnige, mysterieuze draai aan juke en footwork, de felle elektronische dansmuziek uit Chicago. Het album werd uitgeroepen tot 'Best New Album' door Pitchfork en werd bejubeld door pers en publiek. Jlin leerde het vak van footwork-pioniers RP Boo en DJ Rashad en werkte samen met o.a. Holly Herndon, William Basinski en danseres Avril Stormy Unger.

Om 19:30 uur is er een inleiding op Foyerdeck 1: Ben Frost en Marcel Weber (MFO) in gesprek met muziekjournalist Holly Dicker (o.a. Resident Advisor, The Wire, XLR8R, The Fader) over het nieuwe album 'The Centre Cannot Hold' en de spectaculaire AV-show die hiermee gepaard gaat.
Voor en na de concerten draait Arif zijn favouriete platen.

During Amsterdam Dance Event The Rest is Noise explores the boundaries of dance music in this double bill with two of the most extraordinary artists of our time. Following his blistering performances in 2012, 2013 and 2014, Ben Frost is back with a new AV show based on his latest album The Centre Cannot Hold in collaboration with visual artist Marcel Weber a.k.a. MFO. None other than Jlin signs for the opening set, with the world première of her new AV-show, designed by MFO and performed by visual artist Theresa Baumgartner.

A heady electronic concoction of dark noise, subsonic bass and eerie synthesizer tones, Ben Frost’s music engulfs the listener in awe-inspiring waves of sound. The Australian composer’s goal is to convey raw power, and he is duly renowned for the intensity of his live shows. His foremost sources of inspiration include the rock concerts he attended in his youth and the volatile landscapes of Iceland, where he currently lives.

Jlin became a dance festival hot ticket following the release of her critically acclaimed debut, Dark Energy, which was voted best album of 2015 by The Wire magazine’s contributors. Her recently released second album, Black Origami, offers yet another highly personal and mysterious take on juke and footwork, the rhythmically charged electronic dance music genre from Chicago. Voted 'Best New Album'on Pitchfork and received tons of praise by critics and public. Jlin was mentored by footwork pioneers RP Boo and DJ Rashad, and has collaborated with Holly Herndon, William Basinski and dancer Avril Stormy Unger, among others.

At 19:30 there will be a pre-concert talk at Foyerdeck 1: Ben Frost and Marcel Weber (MFO) will speak with music journalist Holly Dicker (e.a. Resident Advisor, The Wire, XlR8R, The Fader) about the new album 'The Centre Cannot Hold' and the art of AV-performances.
Before and after the concerts Arif will spin his favourite records.
