Van beroemd muzikant in Ethiopië naar taxichauffeur in Washington naar internationale ster. Dat is de carrière van de inmiddels legendarische Ethio Jazz-toetsenist en -accordeonist Hailu Mergia. Zijn vergeten muziek verwierf een cultstatus toen het in 2013 opnieuw werd uitgebracht door het Amerikaanse label Awesome Tapes From Africa. Nu is hij terug met zijn eerste nieuwe album sinds 15 jaar, Lala Belu.
Hailu Mergia maakte verschillende succesvolle albums in de jaren 70 en 80 met onder meer de Walias Band. Zijn karakteristieke, laidback funky en bedwelmende geluid is typisch voor de geliefde Ethiopische 70s jazz. Tegenwoordig treedt Mergia op met een jazztrio met Alem Kebede en Ken Joseph.

Support-act is de Ghanese DJ/producer en labelgenoot DJ Katapila. Zijn energieke, vrolijke en opzwepende DJ-sets zijn langzamerhand een begrip aan het worden. Live vult hij een meedogenloze muzikale selectie aan met elektronische percussie en kermisvocalen met volledige euforie tot gevolg.
DJ Katapila’s nieuwe EP Aroo op Awesome Tapes from Africa barst van de snelle pan-West-Afrikaanse elektronische muziek en is de opvolger van zijn doorbraak EP Trotro (2016).
Katapila begon in het begin van de jaren ’90 als een mobiele DJ bij begrafenissen in Ghana. Spontaan voegde hij Ga- en Twi-chants en raps toe tijdens instrumentale breaks van de radiohits die hij draaide. Na verloop van tijd voegde hij hier ook elektronische drumpads, percussie en samplers toe en dit was het begin van zijn trademark dance-sound die nu zo bekend is Ghana en andere delen van West-Africa.

DJ Katapila is a Ghanaian DJ/producer whose relentlessly joyful DJ sets have swiftly become a thing of legend: splicing the neo-traditional dance music styles of his youth in Accra with the uptempo, bass-heavy, Roland 808-rooted sounds of Detroit techno, Chicago acid and house. Live he adorns his killer selections with electronic percussion and vocal interjections that help galvanise waves of full-blown euphoria wherever he plays.
DJ Katapila's new Aroo EP (Awesome Tapes From Africa) is the latest addition to the iconoclastic producer’s catalog of fast-paced, pan-West African-influenced dance music and follows his debut Trotro (2016) which ignited the international acclaim for his work, with the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Resident Advisor and FACT heaping praise on his work.
Cutting his teeth in the early 90s as a mobile DJ at funerals across Ghana, Katapila began spontaneously inserting Ga- and Twi-language chants and raps into instrumental breaks of the well-trodden international house and techno radio hits he’d been playing. Performing on his Yamaha DD11 electronic drum pads during instrumental breaks, he also added his own percussion. He combined the microphone toasting and his rhythms with a sampler and invented new creations on the fly, establishing his trademark rough-edged dance sound which has now become ubiquitous in Ghana and other parts of West Africa.
