Close to me

De weemoed en het verlangen van de fado, de Portugese volksmuziek, zijn sterk aanwezig in het nieuwe avontuur van jazzdiva Maria Mendes. Samen met het Metropole Orkest werpt zij met haar nieuwe cd Close to Me een eigentijdse blik op het genre. De Portugees-Nederlandse zangeres vertolkt eigen songs en bestaande fado’s in weelderige symfonische jazz-orkestraties van John Beasley, de Amerikaanse pianist/dirigent die samenwerkte met Miles Davis.

In de zang van Maria Mendes komen haar verschillende achtergronden samen: klassiek, jazz, fado en latin. Ze wordt geroemd wordt door grootheden als Quincy Jones en Hermeto Pascoal, die een nummer op de cd schreef voor Maria. John Beasley werkte samen met een ontzagwekkende hoeveelheid muzikale iconen, onder wie Dianne Reeves, Chaka Khan en Herbie Hancock.

De kaartverkoop van dit concert is gestart voordat de huidige coronamaatregelen van kracht werden. Vanwege coronabeperkingen is het waarschijnlijk dat de aanvangstijd en de placering nog wijzigen. Ook is het mogelijk dat we het concert moeten annuleren of dat de toegestane zaalcapaciteit op de concertdatum onvoldoende is voor alle kaartkopers. In alle gevallen ontvangen kaartkopers hierover bericht en bieden we de mogelijkheid tot restitutie. We vragen je begrip en uiteraard hopen we dat dit niet nodig zal zijn.

The nostalgia and desire inherent to fado and the Portuguese folk music style are strongly present in the new adventure of jazz diva Maria Mendes. Together with the Metropole Orchestra she expresses on her new album Close to Me a contemporary vision on the genre. The Portuguese-Dutch singer performs her own compositions alongside original fado songs in lush symphonic orchestrations by John Beasley, the American pianist/conductor who collaborated with Miles Davis.

Maria Mendes is known for her purity of tone and her graceful, lyrical phrasing. Her voice brings together all her backgrounds: classical music, jazz, fado and latin. No wonder she has been praised by greats such as Quincy Jones and Hermeto Pascoal, who has written a song specially for this project.  John Beasley has performed with an awe-inspiring list of music icons including Dianne Reeves, Chaka Khan and Herbie Hancock.

Ticket sales for this event started before the current corona measures were taken. As a result of the ongoing battle against the virus, this event is still subject to change. We will likely have to adjust the starting time and hall plan. There is also a possibility we will have to cancel the concert in its entirety. In all cases, ticket buyers will be notified and have the option to receive a refund. We ask for your understanding and hope that it will not come to this.
