Minimalism at its most powerful

Recap 4 april 2025

Eight trumpeters led by innovator Marco Blaauw

On April 4, 2025, minimalism took the spotlight throughout the Muziekgebouw. The unique ensemble The Monochrome Project used eight trumpets to leave a crushing impression. Using only the most essential notes, the group managed to create a beautiful richness of sound in its compositions. In the process, they presented a world premiere of No Grid in the Sky by Elena Rykova.

In the afternoon, The Monochrome Project held a public rehearsal of Rykova's work. This involved the musicians walking around the entrance hall, the foyer decks and the Grote Zaal. The trumpeters walked in between the audience. This intimacy only added to the powerful, minimalist style of music playing.

In the evening, the musicians were once again scattered throughout the Muziekgebouw, this time warming up the audience for Rykova's world premiere. As soon as The Monochrome Project departed for the Great Hall, Minimalism at its most powerful began. This time, the minimalist tones of the trumpets were complimented by percussion. The audience was taken on a sonic journey of sounds and emotion. The group of trumpet players knew exactly how to extract the beauty from the compositions. Not playing too much, not too little, a perfect balance for this concert.
