Mitra

Mitra is het waargebeurde verhaal van de Iraanse psychoanalytica Mitra Kadivar, die in 2012 om onduidelijke redenen in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis in Teheran opgesloten werd. Regisseur Jorge León maakte van haar ongelofelijke verhaal een hybride kunstwerk dat een kruising is tussen muziektheater, documentaire en installatie.

Het libretto is gebaseerd op de steeds wanhopigere e-mails die Mitra verstuurt vanuit de inrichting in de hoop aan haar kafkaëske situatie te ontsnappen. Componisten Eva Reiter en George van Dam schreven daarbij zintuiglijke muziek, met zang van Claron McFadden. De tekst, muziek en filmbeelden, gemaakt in een psychiatrische inrichting in Frankrijk, tonen Mitra’s strijd als een indringende, filmische ervaring – een schreeuw vanuit opsluiting en isolement.

Mitra is the true story of Iranian psychoanalyst Mitra Kadivar, who in 2012 was locked up in a psychiatric hospital in Tehran. Director Jorge León turned her incredible story into a hybrid artwork combining music theatre, documentary and installation.

The libretto is based on the increasingly desperate e-mails Mitra sent from the institution in the hope of escaping her Kafkaesque situation. Composers Eva Reiter and George van Dam have written sensual music, with vocals by Claron McFadden. The text, music and film images, recorded in a psychiatric institution in France, show Mitra’s struggle as a poignant, cinematic experience – a cry from confinement and isolation.
