Spotlight on the double bass

With a passion for experimentation and innovation, Plein Theater presents Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam. Brand new compositions by leading musicians form the core of this concert series for contemporary chamber music. Bass clarinetist Fie Schouten and composer Aspasia Nasopoulou curate the series, which takes place monthly on Sunday afternoons.

This edition of Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam opens with the Spanish-Dutch double bassist Beltane Ruiz Molina. Primarily active in Germany and Belgium, Ruiz Molina presents a repertoire by composers with a multicultural background. In the second half, duo Gross & Schouten and Roelofsen join the program. They present a new electro-acoustic work, a reworked version of an older composition by Doina Rotaru with clear folk music influences, and conclude with a Fluxus-piece by the American artist Benjamin Patterson. For this work, Patterson used the brown paper and packaging materials from Christmas gifts—materials that are normally discarded after the holidays.

This concert takes place at the Plein Theater as part of the Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam series.
