Partita for 8 Voices

Van luchtige popsongs tot atonale muziek, van kraakheldere close harmony tot jodelen, het bereik van Roomful of Teeth is immens. De acht zangers van dit jonge Amerikaanse ensemble (dit festival ook te zien en horen in de Mapplethorpe-voorstelling Triptych) staan bekend om hun genre-overschrijdende experimenten, hun veelzijdigheid en hun humor.

Niet voor niets schrijven jonge Amerikaanse componisten graag speciaal voor hen. In dit concert zingen ze werk van onder anderen Missy Mazzoli (studeerde bij Louis Andriessen en David Lang), Ted Hearne en Caroline Shaw, zelf lid van het ensemble. Met haar overrompelende Partita for 8 Voices, dat het hoofdbestanddeel van dit concert vormt, won de destijds dertigjarige Shaw in 2013 als jongste componist ooit de Pulitzerprijs voor Muziek.

From light-hearted pop songs to atonal music, from crystal clear close harmony to yodelling – Roomful of Teeth has an immense range. This young American ensemble (which can also be seen and heard at this festival’s Mapplethorpe performance Triptych) consists of eight singers, known for their genre-defying experiments, versatility and humour.

It is understandable that young American composers like to write especially for them. In this concert they sing work by Missy Mazzoli (who studied with Louis Andriessen and David Lang), Ted Hearne and Caroline Shaw, a member of the ensemble. Her overwhelming Partita for 8 Voices, this concert’s main piece, earned Shaw the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013. Aged thirty, she was the youngest composer ever to win this prize.
