Young Japanese composer writes new work for flute

In January 2026, Plein Theater presents a new edition of Composer’s Treat, a unique residency where experiment and innovation take center stage. This time we welcome the young Japanese composer Minami Nagai, a promising talent based in Munich, who will broaden her horizon by collaborating with the versatile flutist and ambassador of contemporary music Marieke Franssen. 
 
During an intensive week in Amsterdam, Nagai will develop a new composition, especially for Franssen, which will have its premiere at Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam. The program also promises an adventurous journey through sound worlds: from the percussive pulse of Circumambulation and the acoustic dreamscape of Schimmenwereld, to the lyrical, microtonal waves of Rozalie Hirs’ Article 8 [infinity] and unpredictable fragments of Jacq Palinckx’ 6x Maximal Music!. 
 
Marieke Franssen, known from ensembles such as Het Muziek and Ensemble Modern, brings her extensive experience together with Minami’s fresh perspective and international flair. The result: a concert full of new insights and boundary‑breaking sounds. 
 
This concert takes place at the Plein Theater as part of the Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam series.
