Historic meeting with 31-tone composer comes to life

In 1963, New York composer Joel Mandelbaum visited the Fokker organ, which was at that time still housed in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. Adriaan Fokker, the instrument’s creator, guided Mandelbaum through the intricacies of his ‘brainchild’. Now, Ere Lievonen brings this historic encounter between two 31-tone pioneers to life. The programme features works by Mandelbaum alongside music by other composers who were present at this landmark meeting.

Joel Mandelbaum earned the Fokker organ international fame. In the 1960s, as a musicologist, he did his doctoral research on microtonal tuning possibilities. As a composer, he wrote instantly appealing works in which he applied his knowledge not only to the organ, but also to conventional instruments and voice.
