De gedichten van aja monet komen voort uit de drang om haar gevoelens uit te spreken, over de rechten van zwart, vrouw, queer, trans en anderszins, maar ook over liefde en genot. Ze staat hiervoor het liefst op het podium, in de geest van revolutionaire dichters en performers als Audre Lorde, Last Poets, June Jordan, Amiri Baraka en Jayne Cortez. Tijdens dit intieme late-night concert presenteert aja monet werk van haar bejubelde debuutalbum, when the poems do what they do.
aja monet groeide op in Brooklyn, New York. Van jongs af aan trad ze al op in het legendarische Nuyorican Poets Café. Daar werd ze op 19-jarige leeftijd de jongste Grand Slam Poetry Champion uit de geschiedenis van het podium. Dit jaar verscheen haar debuutalbum, when the poems do what they do, waarop ze samenwerkt met bejubelde jazzmusici als Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (voorheen Christian Scott), Marcus Gilmore, Elena Pinderhughes, Luques Curtis, Samora Pinderhughes and Weedie Braimah.

In aja monet’s poems, we glimpse her urgent commitment to speak. About black resistance, female rights, queer, trans or otherwise, but also about love and joy. On stage, aja is the conduit for her predecessors to channel through. At any given time you’ll find the revolutionary spirit of Audre Lorde, Last Poets, June Jordan, Amiri Baraka, or Jayne Cortez.
aja monet grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She cut her teeth in the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café, where she won the title of Grand Slam Poetry Champion at age 19, making her the youngest titleholder in the venue’s history. On November 3rd she performs works from her widely acclaimed debut album, when the poems do what they do, on what promises to be an intimate late night session. The album was released this year and features jazz luminaries such as Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott), Marcus Gilmore, Elena Pinderhughes, Luques Curtis, Samora Pinderhughes and Weedie Braimah.
