David August

In zijn elektronische muziek maakt de Italiaans-Duitse componist David August een fascinerende ontwikkeling door. Als zoon van een klassiek pianist leek hij voorbestemd voor een academische muziekopleiding, maar hij vierde al jong succes in het clubcircuit als dance-dj/producer. Met zijn nieuwe album en audiovisuele liveshow VĪS verbindt hij zijn verschillende achtergronden en vermengt hij elektronica met de klanken van onder meer orkesten, koorzang, klokken, elektrische gitaren en jazzdrums.

VĪS (Latijn voor energie, kracht) komt voort uit een periode van bezinning en zelfreflectie die David August doormaakte in Rome. Twee jaar lang wisselde hij het componeren af met lezen over taal, beweging, wetenschap en mystiek. Het album, dat dit najaar verschijnt, verbeeldt de relatie van mens en natuur door de tijd heen en de rol die expressie en dans daarin spelen. In de liveshow wordt dit visueel vormgegeven door middel van meeslepende visuals van beeldend kunstenaar Marcel Weber, alias MFO.

In his electronic music, Italian-German composer David August has experienced a fascinating development. The son of a classical pianist, August was destined for an academic musical training, but slipped into an early career as a dance music producer and DJ. With his new album and audiovisual live show VĪS he bridges his different backgrounds, connecting electronica to the sounds of, among others, orchestras, choirs, bells, electric guitars and jazz drums. 

VĪS (Latin for energy, force) is the result of a process of self-discovery that David August went through. For two years the composer took time out in Rome to write music and read about language, science, movement and mysticism. The album, to be released this fall, charts mankind’s journey from its cosmic beginnings through the natural world, grounding the experience in rhythmic expression and dance, before returning to the stars in transcended form. Visual artist Marcel Weber, aka MFO, will translate these ideas to the stage by means of immersive visuals.
