Thought-provoking interpretation of Mahler’s symphony

Conductor Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra have gained world fame for their interpretations of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies. In memory of Haitink, who died in 2021, the orchestra appoints a young conductor every two years to assist the chief conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Camerata RCO, the chamber orchestra consisting of orchestra members, now performs Mahler’s Fifth Symphony in a version for small chamber orchestra conducted by this great talent.

Michael Gieler, artistic director of IJ-Salon: ‘This programme came about rather naturally: Camerata RCO with its thought-provoking interpretations of Mahler for chamber orchestra and a new yet-to-be-appointed conductor who will get to follow in Bernard Haitink’s footsteps. All of this takes place simultaneously with the grand Mahler Festival at the Concertgebouw. It offers an intimate glimpse into Mahler’s monumental declaration of love to Alma, enhanced by a theatrical intervention: two actors read a dialogue between Alma and one of her lovers, Oskar Kokoschka.'
