The piano as a vibrating body of sound

SOVT is a piece by Sarah Hennies for prepared piano, whose strings are muted by poster putty. SOVT, or "Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract," are also a series of vocal exercises that Hennies encountered during a course for voice feminization. During one of the exercises, one sings through a straw to regulate air pressure and strengthen the voice. In SOVT, the piece, Hennies summons vibrations similar to sensations in mouth and throat by singing through a straw. Its restrained strings and rhythmic passages result in a distinct body of sound; in something that exists between piano and percussion.

Sarah Hennies is a composer whose work concerns musical, sociopolitical, and psychological issues as queer & trans identity, psycho-acoustics, and social and neurological conditions underlying creative thought. SOVT was recorded and will be performed by richi valitutto; pianist, chamber musician, vocal accompanist, founding member of the ensemble Wild Up and Julius Eastman scholar.

In collaboration with the Amsterdam concert initiative van Horen Zeggen

"It requires an almost invisible virtuosity from richi valitutto, who interprets the work with astonishing precision and deep sensitivity." (Peter Margasak - The Best Contemporary Classical Music of 2025)
