From birdsong to folk music

Nieuw Amsterdams Peil is wholeheartedly dedicated to the chamber music of our time. With its inventive programmes for various line-ups, the ensemble is a regular performer at the Muziekgebouw. Today’s performance centres on the classic combination of violin and piano. The programme features Debussy’s lyrical Violin Sonata, a brand-new work by Amsterdam-based Brazilian composer and saxophonist Yedo Gibson, a solo piano piece, and a song cycle by Patricio Wang based on Chilean music and poetry.

Patricio Wang, who came to the Netherlands as a political refugee in 1976 and studied here, arranged his Cyclo Mistraliano – set to the poetry of Nobel laureate Gabriela Mistral – specifically for Nieuw Amsterdams Peil. Wang has been collaborating with soprano Winanda van Vliet for half a century. The Frenchman François-Bernard Mâche studied under the 20th-century legend Olivier Messiaen and, like his mentor, enjoys incorporating birdsong into his music; his piano work Alcyone features the song of the African white-browed robin-chat.

Outdoor concert
This Terrace Concert is an outdoor event. The sun can be intense and the wind can be quite strong near the water, so come prepared. In the event of unfavourable weather conditions, the performance will be held indoors in the Entrance Hall, which overlooks the river IJ.
