The essence of Louis Andriessen on his birthday

As a composer, one must sometimes make rigorous decisions to achieve a specific sonic ideal. Louis Andriessen did just that with his Symphony for open strings. Written for twelve soloists restricted to just four open strings each. No vibrato, no fingers on the strings. The result: a pure, open sound and melodies in which the players hand off their notes to the next open string in the melody – like a gift on a silver platter.

In De Staat as well, the instruments are pushed to their limits – solid, rhythmic, percussive. It is remarkable how the original holds its ground even when you ‘reduce’ De Staat to just two pianos. You get the same excitement, equally overwhelming, yet this version also offers a crystal-clear view of the structure and the notes. This is especially true when performed by Gerard Bouwhuis and Ellen Corver, great connoisseurs and champions of contemporary Dutch music.
