From the streets to the concert hall

Folk music touches the heart. With this festive programme, the musicians of Asko|Schönberg take their hats off to all their anonymous colleagues who have been singing universal emotions since time immemorial. The step from the street to the concert hall can be a small one, as Leoš Janáček proves with his arrangement of Moravian folk songs.

Unsuk Chin draws inspiration from the street theatre of her childhood in Seoul. Her highly energetic music contrasts with the naive music of John Adams, who pays tribute to his father and their shared instrument, the clarinet. Thomas van Dun’s latest work is a reflection on the afterlife. In his use of chorales and clouds of sound, his admiration for Ligeti can be heard.

During this concert, a new episode of Stairway to Music, the series of music videos filmed in unique locations, will be launched. In this video David Kweksilber plays Slow Step by Dutch composer Guus Janssen. As a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, he takes you into a one-man performance in which the magic of sound is created in an unconventional location. Watch the complete series of Stairway to Music.

This concert will later be broadcast by the NTR on NPO Klassiek
