The expressive lyricism of Jean-Philippe Rameau

The Sweelinck Baroque Orchestra of the CvA’s Early Music Department performs highlights from Les Boréades, Jean-Philippe Rameau’s last opera. In this virtuoso masterpiece about Queen Alphise and Boreas, the god of the North Wind, love is severely put to the test. It is the crowning glory of the oeuvre of Rameau, who was eighty at the time. He wanted this lyrical opera to outshine everything he had written up to that point.

In addition to the selection from Les Boréades, the programme features arias and instrumental parts from other operas by Rameau, including his very first opera Hippolyte et Aricie, the tragedies Dardanus and Castor et Pollux, the comic opera Platée and the opéra-ballets Les fêtes d'Hébé, Les Indes galantes and Les surprises de l’amour. A wonderful programme full of highlights, with the voices of the singers of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam at their very best.
