De esoterische wereld van Erik Satie

De mystieke Satie in muziek en beeld met theatrale première van Uspud.

Reinbert de Leeuw geeft tijdens het Holland Festival een piano-recital met werk van de Franse componist Erik Satie uit de periode tussen 1891 en 1894. Centraal in de voorstelling staat de instrumentale versie van Saties zelden uitgevoerde werk Uspud, een bizar ‘christelijk ballet in drie actes’ waarin tal van geestverschijningen hun opwachting maken, zoals de Kerk, heiligen, martelaren, demonen en Christus aan het kruis. Het stuk heeft de kruisiging als centraal thema en verbindt op Saties typisch eigenzinnige wijze mystieke en satirische elementen. De voorstelling wordt ondersteund met lichtontwerp en beelden van videokunstenaar Arjen Klerkx. Uspud wordt voor de pauze voorafgegaan door vier andere werken uit Saties esoterische periode.

Dutch conductor, pianist and compo-ser Reinbert de Leeuw plays a recital consisting of works by the French composer Erik Satie, written in the period between 1891 and 1894. The programme is based around an instrumental version of Satie’s seldomly performed work Uspud, a bizarre ‘christian ballet in three acts’, featuring a host of ghostly appearances, like the Church, saints, martyrs, demons and Christ on the cross. The ballet has the crucifixion as its central theme. In his own inimitable way Satie has managed to link mystical and satirical elements. The performance is supported by lighting design and video by Arjen Klerkx.
As well as Uspud, de Leeuw will play four other works from Satie’s esoteric period.
