Virtuoso Cameroonian bass player sings in his mother tongue

Bass player Richard Bona (Cameroon, 1967) is famed for his vituoso playing. Since his solodebut Scenes From My Life from 1999 his vocals starting attracting attention as well. Through the hypnotizing sounds of his mother tongue Duala, Bona sings jazz, latin, pop, afrobeat, and funk masterfully. With the Metropole Orchestra Richard Bona brings orchestral versions of both his best work and newly composed music. Previously they collaborated successfully in for instance the Quincy Jones Prom 2016 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

At a young age Richard Bona started making music on the balafon (type of marimba) and many other self-made instrument. The music of bass player Jaco Pastorius inspired him to start focusing on the bass guitar. After studying in Germany and France, he moved to New York in 1995, where he made a name for himself. He played with among other Joe Zawinul, Branford Marsalis, Chaka Kahn, Bobby McFerrin, Herbie Hancock, and Pat Metheny.
