Freedom and isolation in two works by Jonathan Dove

English composer Jonathan Dove chose Togetherness as the title of his most recently written string quartet. He created the work during the pandemic, during which people were separated from each other; togetherness was not a given. The basis of a quartet is togetherness; that too fell away during Covid-19. ‘Togetherness is about the loss of that intimacy and the attempts to find each other again in the imaginary space of music,’ Bas van Putten wrote in De Groene Amsterdammer.

Cuarteto Quiroga plays another recent piece by Dove, together with tenor Ilker Arcayürek: In Damascus. It is a powerful adaptation of lyrics by Syrian poet Ali Safar; ‘a chilling and powerful vision of indescribable beauty, torn apart by a haphazard war.’ These very themes of freedom and isolation are also reflected in Brahms’ music. With his good friend and violinist Joseph Joachim, he shared the motto ‘Frei aber Einsam’, translated into the musical notes f-a-e.

Initially, this concert was supposed to take place during the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam 2022. Because of the coronavirus it was cancelled at that time. Fortunately, the premiere of Jonathan Dove’s new string quartet can take place this time.
