What is the meaning of singing?

Boundary-pushing clarinettist and maker Jelmer de Moed presents his latest series: You. In this series, he explores the power of you, the audience! To what extent do you shape the musical experience? And how can we enhance our interaction with musicians?

The second meeting in the serie, You Speak in Tongues, explores the ‘great nothing’: why are we here? Three musicians emerge from the audience. Their unintelligible prayers, spell, and poems fuse into sound to draw us into a musical ritual. It is as if a divine voice has whispered this music into their ears, its sheer beauty serving as proof of His/Her authority. Yet, nothing is permanent; there is no good or evil, only a vibrating power of sound.

This concert also features the world premiere of Nuno Lobo’s Carolina’s Book of Spells, inspired by the everyday, mysterious rituals of his grandmother, Carolina. Through seven movements for soprano and clarinet, her ‘spells’ tell a new story. Jelmer de Moed is a creator at the Muziekgebouw Production House. In addition to developing his series YOU, he plays in MANA, together with Laura Daelemans and Seppe Indigne, for the Belgian I Solisti. This is another project born under the wing of the Production House.
