First religious fervour and Mozart’s timeless swan song

Estonian conductor Kristiina Poska is among the generation of young women who are emphatically claiming a place in the traditionally male-dominated world of conducting. Since 2019, she has been chief conductor of the Flanders Symphony Orchestra Symphony, which is based in Ghent and plays all major Flemish concert halls. Together with the renowned Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, the orchestra performs a religiously inspired work by her compatriot Tõnu Kõrvits, and Mozart’s timelessly beautiful Requiem.

Kõrvits composed an intimate and introspective work that builds on the long tradition of Estonian religious hymns and his country’s folk music. Eloquent music that touches the audience immediately, full of archaic inflections, contrasting nicely with Mozart’s grand swan song. Austrian composer Franz Xaver Süssmayr completed the Requiem masterly in the spirit of his teacher, who tragically died at such a young age.
