Cantates by Alessandro Scarlatti

Any decent composer in the 1700s ventured into the trend of the day: the Italian cantata. But few did so with as much brilliance as Alessandro Scarlatti. Mezzo-soprano Lucile Richardot has a voice like no other and is the heroine of Ensemble Correspondances. Shoulder to shoulder, she performs a triptych with harpsichordist Philippe Grisvard that showcases Scarlatti’s versatility, inexhaustible imagination and poetic disposition.

Alessandro Scarlatti, father of the famous harpsichordist and composer Domenico Scarlatti, was very popular in his time. He received commissions from Rome, Venice and Florence and was of great importance to Neapolitan opera. Much of his work has been lost, but his name is almost synonymous with the Italian cantata because of the more than 600 cantatas he wrote.
