Intimate ode to the genius of Purcell

How grief can sometimes lead to something very beautiful. When the British composer Henry Purcell died in 1695, his student John Blow composed a phenomenal ode in his memory. Ode on the death of Mr. Henry Purcell is an almost intimate ode to the composer who was respectfully known as the ‘British Orpheus’. Two great countertenors and baroque ensemble PRJCT Amsterdam perform this ode plus other arias by Purcell and his contemporaries.

A group of outstanding young baroque musicians with a shared musical vision are at the heart of PRJCT Amsterdam. Or as Bachtrack put it: ‘The orchestra of twelve musicians sounds with fullness and faithfully follows the aesthetic proposal of its charismatic leader.’ That figurehead is the successful Dutch countertenor Maarten Engeltjes. Alexander Chance, a countertenor in his own right, now joins him, following in the footsteps of his world-renowned father, Michael Chance.
