Personal and contemplative work by a great Baroque composer

While Handel’s music is typically grand, exuberant and theatrical, his Nine German Arias stands apart as one of his most personal and contemplative works. Transparent, intimate and refined – Handel can be that too. Poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes wrote the verses: sensitive contemplations on nature, creation and the inner experience of the divine. In Handel’s arias, time seems to stand still. Especially with the voice of countertenor Maarten Engeltjes, who is currently taking the international music world by storm.

The voice regularly enters into dialogue with the instrument, which bend and respond as equal partners in conversation, creating an almost meditative atmosphere. These moments are interspersed with solo works for violin and oboe. Handel composed the Nine German Arias as a farewell to his mother tongue. It was a deeply human detour for a man who would later find fame through his Italian operas and English oratorios.
