A compelling listening ritual of electroacoustic soundscapes

A concert is also a ritual, and that certainly applies to this jam-packed double bill. With his stuffed animals and colourful scarves, Charlemagne Palestine is the high priest of ritualistic minimalism. Tonight, Palestine joins forces with two younger-generation sound artists - guitarist Oren Ambarchi and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan - to craft a fresh rendition of his classic, Karenina. Their performance will be preceded by a set from Japanese sound artist FUJI|||||||||||TA, who uses his voice and hand-fabricated pipe organ to conjure up subtle, hyper-intense soundscapes.

Composer, performer and visual artist Charlemagne Palestine, an exponent of the New York experimental school, originally created Karenina (1997) as a solo work for Indian harmonium and voice. It is colourful drone music that echoes his fascination with Indian improvisation and spiritual chanting from the synagogue. Reimagined in this new version by a super trio, Karenina is poised to deliver yet another dynamic and transformative experience for the listener.
