Scottish folk and minimal music for string quartet and smallpipes

The Scottish Maxwell Quartet has a unique artistic profile: they combine string quartet repertoire with folk music from their homeland. This has led to a series of acclaimed albums centred on the works of Joseph Haydn. No strangers to the Muziekgebouw, the Maxwells previously performed here during the closing concert of the 2026 String Quartet Biennale. Tonight, they join forces with the young smallpipes sensation Brìghde Chaimbeul. Besides traditional tunes and their own work, they will also play music by minimalist maestro Philip Glass – a combination that proves to be a surprisingly good match.

Last year, Brìghde Chaimbeul (‘Breech-uh Campbell’) took the stage solo for the Muziekgebouw series The Rest is Noise. Her Dutch festival credits include September Me, Le Guess Who?, and Rewire, while in the England she has performed at the Glastonbury Festival. With the Maxwells, Chaimbeul takes on Glass’s classic Third String Quartet, ‘Mishima,’ which shares clear common ground with her own ambient-leaning Celtic folk. The same applies to Linda Buckley’s Samhain, a fascinating drone piece about the Celtic New Year, a time when contact with the spirit world is possible.
