Reflection and experiment in works by Pärt, Martin, Berio and Glass

The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is often mentioned in the same breath as the work of Arvo Pärt and other Baltic composers. Most recently, the ensemble gave a standout performance celebrating Pärt’s 90th birthday. This time, the choir is shifting focus to gems of Western choral music: Frank Martin’s magnificent Mass for Double Choir and Luciano Berio’s virtuoso Cries of London. Naturally, Arvo Pärt and his Baltic colleagues also feature in this programme.

Swiss composer Frank Martin called his Mass for Double Choir ‘a matter between God and myself.’ He kept the work tucked away for forty years before finally allowing it to be published; since then, it has grown into a landmark of 20th-century choral music. Expect a deeply moving rendition of this masterpiece from the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
