In prelude to the tenth anniversary edition in 2025, the Flamenco Biennale Netherlands is organising a special interlude. With a concert in the evening by flamenco greats Estrella Morente and guitarist Rafael Riqueni. In the afternoon, there is Flamenco OFF-BEAT with exciting performances throughout the building by a new generation of creators from the forefront of flamenco art.
Evening concert
Singer Estrella Morente and guitarist Rafael Riqueni will give the living tradition of the cante jondo, the expressive and dramatic singing style within flamenco music, a grand stage. In an intimate recital, the two flamenco icons pay tribute to two unforgettable artists of the last century, La Niña de los Peines and Niño Ricardo.
Estrella Morente is the daughter of legendary singer and flamenco caller Enrique Morente, who grew up in the Albaicín, Granada's Moorish quarter. Riquieni is one of the most delicate guitarists after Paco de Lucía, with the classical, twinkling elegance of his native Seville in his strings. At the Muziekgebouw, 'Estrella y Rafael' will present their eponymous album for the first time outside Spain.
'Rafael Riqueni is flamenco in its purest form. Sometimes one note is enough to move... agonisingly beautiful.' (Volkskrant 2020)
