Nocturnal dreams and sweet melancholy

When one thinks of Chopin, his nocturnes are often the first to come to mind. They are nocturnal dreams, full of dark passion, drenched in sweet melancholy. Tonight, pianist Pavel Kolesnikov performs all 21 in a unique, one-off event. It doesn’t get any more ‘Chopin’ than this. This year (2026), he will also be recording all the nocturnes for the harmonia mundi label.

Kolesnikov previously recorded Chopin. His Mazurkas, in particular, were met with high praise. Gramophone compared his rubato to the description Franz Liszt gave of Chopin’s rubato: ‘A wind plays in the leaves, life unfolds and develops beneath them, but the tree remains the same.’ These nocturnes form a diptych with Kolesnikov’s performance of Morton Feldman’s Triadic Memories two days later, on Friday 9 April. Both composers strive for an intimate sound world, in which atmosphere and timbre are paramount.
