The pinnacle of piano trio artistry

With his Archduke Trio, Beethoven reached the pinnacle of piano trio artistry. The work demands a perfect balance between piano, violin and cello. With its highly melodious melodies, it evokes a sense of serenity, wisdom and human warmth. The premiere was Beethoven’s last public performance as a pianist. The Faust-Queyras-Melnikov trio delivers a brilliant conclusion to their Beethoven exploration with this programme.

In 1806, an arrangement for piano trio of Beethoven’s Second Symphony appeared, with the title page claiming it was ‘by the composer himself’. This was merely a marketing ploy, as it was actually Ferdinand Ries who penned the arrangement – albeit under Beethoven’s watchful eye. It doesn’t matter. According to Opus Klassiek, Faust, Queyras and Melnikov perform this trio in a way that is ‘simply sublime’.
