A dream ensemble performs Beethoven’s earliest piano trios

What a delight to experience Beethoven’s Opus 1 two hundred years after his passing – especially when performed by such a dream ensemble. Isabelle Faust, last season’s Artist in Focus, plays Beethoven’s earliest piano trios with her longtime ‘partners in crime’, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and pianist Alexander Melnikov. They have been a beloved trio for many years. This concert is the first in a special series: the trio will play all of Beethoven’s works for piano trio in two days.

Youthful bravery coupled with the wisdom of an old soul – that is how one might describe Beethoven’s Opus 1. These three piano trios marked his entrance into the musical world of Vienna. Beethoven’s unspoken mission: to impress ‘Papa’ Haydn. He did much more than that. Ferdinand Ries, who later became his pupil, claimed that Haydn, the father of the piano trio, was actually jealous. When Haydn suggested that Beethoven include the words ‘Pupil of Haydn’ on the title pages of his early works, Beethoven refused, according to Ries.
