Intense music theatre by Tansy Davies about loss and rebirth

In Passion of Mary Magdalene, British composer Tansy Davies gives Mary Magdalene a voice – positioning her not as a supporting character, but as the story’s protagonist. She takes centre stage in this intense music theatre experience about loss, transformation and rebirth. Davies connects the Christian story with ancient resurrection myths. Echoes of the Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris resound. Time and again, it is a woman who makes the impossible possible.

Mary Magdalene’s voice emerges through the raw, dreamlike poetry of American poet Ruth Fainlight. Composer Tansy Davies writes vital, physical music that blends influences from the classical avant-garde, funk and experimental rock. Her works are often energetic and rhythmically driven, characterized by rich orchestration and a distinct ‘collage’ approach.
