The Corridor & The Cure

Wat als ouderdom op magische wijze is te genezen? The Cure is een nieuwe kameropera van de Britse componist Harrison Birtwistle in opdracht van het Londense Royal Opera House en het Aldeburgh Festival, over de heks Medea die haar schoonvader Aeson met een flinke portie magie zijn jeugd teruggeeft. The Cure is geschreven als pendant van Birtwistles The Corridor, over het fatale moment waarop Orpheus omkijkt naar zijn Eurydice.

De twee werken – te zien in één decor, onder één regie – zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden door hun radicaal vernieuwende kijk op twee Griekse herrijzenis-mythes. Beide worden uitgevoerd door sopraan Elizabeth Atherton, tenor Mark Padmore en het London Sinfonietta. Een keelsnoerende double bill.

What if old age can be cured by magic? Commissioned by London’s Royal Opera House and the Aldeburgh Festival, composer Harrison Birtwistle and writer David Harsent’s new chamber opera The Cure tells the story of Medea, the witch who restores her father-in-law Aeson’s youth with powerful magic. The Cure has been written as the companion piece to The Corridor, which focuses on the fatal moment of Orpheus’ backward glance at Eurydice.

Created on one set by one creative team, these two pieces of music theatre are inextricably intertwined by their radical interpretation of two Greek resurrection myths. Performed by soprano Elizabeth Atherton, tenor Mark Padmore and London Sinfonietta, this promises to be a gripping double bill.
