The Gloaming

Wanneer vijf meesterlijke musici spontaan samenkomen in de studio kunnen er wonderen gebeuren, zo bewijst The Gloaming. Niet lang na die eerste sessie in 2011 riep Irish Times de band uit to nieuwe ‘supergroep’ van de Ierse muziek. Deze kopstukken uit de folk, hedendaagse muziek en alternatieve rock spelen adembenemende nieuwe versies van oude Ierse songs, ‘vermomd als verfijnde kamermuziek’, aldus de Volkskrant, ‘minimalistisch en bijna sacraal gespeeld, door meditatief tokkelende gitaren, viool en piano.’

De leden van The Gloaming hebben ieder voor zich hun sporen verdiend in de Ierse en Keltische muziek, en in samenwerking met beroemdheden als Antony & The Johnsons, David Byrne en Laurie Anderson. Martin Hayes, een van de beste fiddle-spelers ter wereld, en gitarist Dennis Cahill werken al langer samen. Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh speelt de atypische Noorse hardangar-fiddle en Thomas ‘Doveman’ Bartlett, die samenwerkte met indie-rockband The National, zorgt voor avontuurlijk pianospel. Instrumentals worden afgewisseld met songs, uitgevoerd door zanger Iarla Ó Lionáird.

When five masters of music have a spontaneous studio session, miracles can happen, as proven by The Gloaming. Soon after the first jam session the band was hailed by The Irish Times as the new supergroup of Irish music. These major talents from folk, contemporary music and alternative rock play breathtaking new versions of old Irish songs, ‘disguised as refined chamber music’, said de Volkskrant, ‘minimalistic, almost sacral playing by meditative guitar, violin and piano.’

All members of The Gloaming are seasoned recording artists in Irish and Celtic music, some having worked with such names as Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne and Laurie Anderson. Martin Hayes, one of the best fiddle players in the world, and guitarist Dennis Cahill have been frequent collaborators for some time. Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh plays the atypical Norwegian hardangar fiddle and Thomas ‘Doveman’ Bartlett, who has worked with indie rock band The National, provides adventurous piano playing. Instrumentals are alternated with songs, performed by vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird.
