Stravinsky's famous parable with puppets by Georg Baselitz

Top violinist Isabelle Faust – last season’s Artist in Focus at the Muziekgebouw – leads a chamber ensemble of international stature in a special production of Igor Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat. Stravinsky’s thrilling music was inspired by he travelling puppet shows he saw as a child in St. Petersburg. The combination of ironic Italian commedia dell’arte and the rugged fantasy world of Slavic fairy tales comes to life in Stravinsky’s unadorned, direct music.

The story of a Russian soldier led astray by the devil is brought to life by the world-famous Salzburg Marionette Theatre. The production was created for the prestigious Salzburg Festival. The legendary German maestro of modern expressionism, Georg Baselitz, almost 90 years old, designed the marionettes and the set for this colourful, earthy performance of a dark parable.
