Visual soundscapes by Tsoupaki, Kyriakides, and Larcher

Some landscapes feel mythical, such as the South Tyrolean mountains captured in the exquisite black-and-white photography of Awoiska van der Molen. Her impressive visual installation inspired Austrian composer Thomas Larcher to create contemplative, colourful music for soprano and ensemble. The experience becomes truly mythical in the instrumental melodrama Medea by former Composer Laureate of the Netherlands, Calliope Tsoupaki. A poignant descent into the soul of the tormented sorceress who killed her own children.

Landscapes, dream images and myths are what this programme is all about. And, of course, the power of stories. For his sweltering Now we send you this message, composer Yannis Kyriakides used a historical letter as a starting point, bringing to life a fascinating episode from the history of his native Cyprus. Nearby, on Crete, Larcher composed his five-part string quartet Madhares, a work defined by its powerful, turbulent rhythms.
