Baroque composers flex their muscles

Italian Baroque, hip-hop, and breakdance: only Pynarello knows how to bring these worlds together so convincingly. In Macho’s, the collective plunges into the rugged landscape of Southern European Baroque and explores the tension between bravado and vulnerability. The concert unfolds as one grand battle, in which musicians, composers, a breakdancer, and a classically trained dancer fight for their place. Virtuosic music by Vivaldi, Tartini, and Locatelli is infused with a raw, contemporary energy, while the poignant arias of Barbara Strozzi (one of the first female composers to build an independent musical oeuvre in a male-dominated era) reveal the sensitive side of machismo.

Breakdancer Neo Jansen and dancer Ahmad Joudeh bring this contrast to life physically in a spectacular dance battle, in which Baroque music proves to be just as powerful and combative as hip-hop. Pynarello, which performs everything from memory and is renowned for its infectious energy, transforms Baroque into a surprising fusion of classical and urban sounds. What begins as a clash of styles and characters ends in an exuberant musical celebration.
