Penitential Psalms and Vespers

Two approaches to Russian Orthodox choral music converge here. The Vespers of Victor Kalinnikov (1866–1901) are steeped in the liturgical spirit of their time, marked by seamless melodies, bright harmonies, and a choir that breathes as one. In a completely different era, Alfred Schnittke delivered a bold re-envisioning of these ancient chants with his Penitential Psalms

In these psalms, Orthodox choral traditions are clearly recognizable, yet deliberately stretched and distorted by a late 20th-century musical idiom. Composed in 1988 to mark 1,000 years of Christianity in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, Schnittke’s Stikhi Pokayanniye draws its inspiration from anonymous 16th-century Russian verses on themes of sin and penance.
