Ballade, elegy, and a jazzy double concerto

As early as 2005, Quirine Viersen produced a highly acclaimed CD recording of the Ballade by the Dutch-Swiss composer Frank Martin. Over twenty years later, Ballade will be performed at the Biennale. Fauré’s Élégie was originally written for cello and piano. Fauré later arranged it for orchestra and premiered it with cellist Pablo Casals as the soloist.

For the 2020 festival, Rembrandt Frerichs composed a double concerto for Kian Soltani and kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor, infused with clear Eastern influences. Now, he has written a double concerto for Maja Bogdanovic and Daniel Rowland that highlights his jazz roots. This musical ‘two-to-tango’ brings together two closely connected people. Expect perfect synergy with lush jazz harmonies and non-Western rhythms.
