Ballade, elegy, and a jazzy double concerto

Fauré’s Élégie is one of his most beloved and most performed works for cello, originally scored for cello and piano, later orchestrated by Fauré himself and premiered by Pablo Casals on the cello. This is preceded by the cello section of Phion performing Libera me, the highlight from Fauré’s Requiem. Quirine Viersen performs Frank Martin’s Ballade, which she recorded in 2005.

For the 2020 festival, Rembrandt Frerichs composed a double concerto for Kian Soltani and kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor, infused with clear Eastern influences. Now, he has written a double concerto for Maja Bogdanovic and Daniel Rowland that highlights his jazz roots. This musical ‘two-to-tango’ brings together two closely connected people. Expect perfect synergy with lush jazz harmonies and non-Western rhythms.
