The first work for reed quintet and wind orchestra

The Dutch composer Johan de Meij composed Un Momento Dado as an in memoriam for Johan Cruijff. This unique piece, commissioned by Calefax, is the first of its kind for reed quintet and wind orchestra. De Meij weaves the name Calefax into a recurring motif that takes on many shapes, surging in a virtuosic rush toward a triumphant conclusion. Sizzling, emotional and exhilarating – Un Momento Dado is a rollercoaster ride through different styles.

In addition to being a composer, Johan de Meij is also director of Amstel Music and will personally present the Amstel Music Award to Calefax this evening. The reed quintet is receiving this award for its many years of innovative contribution to the musical landscape. The award, an initiative of Amstel Music, consists of the artwork Chapeau by Theo van der Hoeven and a gift voucher. Previous recipients of the Award include the New Trombone Collective, conductor Heinz Friesen, conductor Henrie Adams and the World Music Competition.

★★★★☆ ‘Syncopated yapping brass, stacked chord columns of fourths and fifths, and jubilant fanfares are a delight to the ear.’ (Volkskrant)
★★★★☆ ‘(…) Un Momento Dado; a thrilling rollercoaster ride through various musical styles.’ (NRC)
