Mystical listening experience by improvisation super group

The Hazard Ensemble of viola player George Dumitriu is not a well-known name as yet, but that may soon change. The ensemble is a super group of improvising musicians from the Netherlands and Belgium who have more than earned their spurs in a variety of genres. Do not expect a cannonade of notes, but a trip of intoxicating acoustic-electronic soundscapes, in the spirit of deep listening guru Pauline Oliveros. ‘Not doing instead of doing,’ Dumitriu says, is Hazard’s game. Waiting, listening. And then it happens.

Dumitriu formed the ensemble on behalf of North Sea Round Town, the fringe festival of North Sea Jazz, where they had their first performance in the summer of 2022. They were so successful that they were invited to perform abroad. Guitarist Raphael Vanoli, who works magic with timbre by blowing on the strings of his guitar, is best known for his work with his experimental band Knalpot. Fast-rising star Fuensanta (bass & vocals) describes her participation in the ensemble as ‘an immersion in a mystical experience’. Top musicians Frank Rosaly and Lennart Heyndels complement the lineup.
