Stockhausen meets The Beach Boys

Avant-gardist Stockhausen and Beach Boy Brian Wilson. Both influential, but completely different. One from a German lignite mining area and the other from sunny California. Wilson was one of the first pop musicians to use the studio as an instrument. And in a way Stockhausen did that too, as one of the first 20th-century composers. Stargaze boldly presents these two musical geniuses side-by-side.

In a performance with six synthesizers, Stargaze demonstrates how Stockhausen’s relatively unknown Stop und Start paved the way for electropop by musicians such as Kraftwerk. With their own unique touch, Kliphuis and Strootman reinterpret Brian Wilson’s music for Smile, a never-completed Beach Boys album that the singer-songwriter described as ‘A Teenage Symphony to God’.
